Term and condition and report.

Firstly, we need to understand the nature of antique porcelain, we are taking about the technology of 200 years ago. Of course, no such things perfect in those time.

Kiln were fire on coal, the result of it can have some of firing specks from flying particles. Example, we sometimes can see some of a firing specks black dots in a cup, a mug or a plate. No computer helps to check the temperature, it purely based on kiln operators experience and rely with ceramicist. This can lead to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines or develop crazing over time, which should not be seen as damage.

Definition of condition in Delightful Vintage Décor

1. Crazing in pottery refers to a web of tiny cracks appearing on the glazed surface of a ceramic piece after firing. It's caused by a mismatch in the thermal expansion rates of the clay body and the glaze, leading to stress as they cool. While often considered a glaze defect, crazing can also be used aesthetically, and some glazes are intentionally designed to create this effect. This is not class as a damage.

2.  Rim and base chips on pottery are a common type of damage, but their impact on the piece's value and usability varies. While base chips are generally considered less significant and may not affect value as long as they aren't visible, rim chips can be more problematic. If the rim is significantly chipped, it can compromise the integrity of the piece and potentially affect its functionality. It will be clearly stated in description.

3. Hairline cracks in pottery, also known as crazing line. If you gently hold it and flick it with your fingernail near the rim it should make a nice ringing sound. A dead thud means it has a fault or crack somewhere. It had 2 types of hairlines,

  1. Fine hairline/Tight hairline – check, gently tap with fingernail and it has nice ring sound. It is a good sign of useable. It will be test with water before listing.
  2. Hairline crack – obviously seen with naked eye, it had a thud dead sound, it may not useable, display condition!

4. Firing spots, or specks, in porcelain are small, often dark, blemishes on the surface of the ceramic after firing. These spots are typically caused by iron impurities in the clay or glaze materials. During firing, these iron compounds can oxidize and form black spots or specks, especially if the clay has a high iron content. This issue can class as imperfection.

5. Repaired I will clearly state if that piece is repaired. I am usually select undamaged pieces unless it is gorgeous and rare pieces.
